Over the summer, we both experienced our first lymphatic drainage massage at Wax By Renata and we are now obsessed! The team at Wax By Renata is incredible at everything they do. Along with receiving incredible services, their spa is incredibly clean and aesthetically GOALS. It is a family run business owned by two sisters, #BOSSBABES. This is one of our favorite places and it's local, so attention Cape Cod friends, this is the place to be. This post will include everything you need to know about a lymphatic drainage massage and our experience.
What is a Lymphatic Drainage massage?
This type of massage uses slow, light pressure movements to increase the flow of lymph and reduce toxins in your body. This type of massage is usually given in a heated room or with a heated blanket to increase lymphatic flow. The massage therapist will apply light pressure and pumping movements to create more movement and will focus on the areas of your lymph nodes.
"Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle and unique type of manual massage technique, which is intended to encourage the natural drainage of the lymph, and it encourages the movement of the fluid around the body. The body has three times more lymph fluid than blood. Lymph travels to the lymph nodes located in the throat, neck, groin, armpits, and the largest lymphatic tissue in the pancreas. " - The Wax By Renata Team
What is Lymph?
Lymph is a clear/white substance that travels through your lymphatic system, including in and out of your lymph nodes. It is responsible for the removal of excess fluids, absorption of fatty acids, and the production of immune cells. Lymph plays a huge role in fighting infections, like keeping you healthy during a crazy pandemic moment.
"Lymph cleanses the body from bacteria and filters through the spleen, thymus, and lymph nodes before emptying into the bloodstream through the left or right vein. The main task of the lymphatic system is a defense against infection and diseases." - The Wax By Renata Team
Why is a Lymphatic Drainage Massage beneficial?
+ Improves your immune system- it helps your body fight off infection (we are in a global pandemic, anything to help our immune systems we are here for) and speeds up healing and recovery from illness
+ Helps reduce water retention- it helps you feel less bloated or swollen
+ Boost weight loss- improving the lymphatic system will improve your metabolic rate, which helps you burn calories more efficiently.
+ Super relaxing- the heated room and slow rhythmic movements allow you to relax and let go of anything on your mind.
"The manual lymphatic drainage helps the body to get rid of the excess fluid, waste, and toxin while improving the function of the lymphatic system and alleviating symptoms of post surgical swelling and post traumatic edema as in sports injuries, plastic surgery, and liposuction. Manual lymphatic drainage promotes general relaxation and skin detoxification including reducing swelling and pain to expedite your healing time. Our manual lymphatic drainage sessions are customized to each client's needs." - The Wax By Renata Team
Other Ways to Improve your Lymphatic System
Stay active! Get your body moving! Activity will help encourage healthy lymph flow, as the movement of the muscles exerts pressure on the lymphatic vessels and keeps them moving.
Make sure to drink plenty of water before and after your massage. This a perfect time to unplug from the outside world. For us, this was the first time in a long time we were just sitting there in our own thoughts and having our minds wander without being distracted from technology. Sometimes you don't realize how much you need to just be still in your own mind and unplugged, and this gave us the perfect reason to do so. Not only did we feel a lot more relaxed but our bodies felt rejuvenated as it was flushed of bad toxins.
