Below you will find an interview between The 411 and the beautiful sisters, Carly and Maddie.
A little bit about each of you
Carly - Originally, I found swimming as a kid because I was scared of any sport that included a ball. I ended up swimming backstroke for UMass Amherst, however, that was cut short because of an injury. That's when I found spinning! I became obsessed with spinning, it was my outlet to let go for 45 minutes a day. I loved it so much I decided it was what I was meant to do. I went through a hard couple of years of auditioning places and getting a lot of "no's" and rejections. I finally got accepted into the B/SPOKE instructor training program in May 2017. Unfortunately, I did not make it through training at that time and got cut from the training program. I went to teach at Cyclebar for the next year and got some experience under my belt. In May of 2018, I started the training program at B/SPOKE for a second time, ended up making it through, and have been living my best life there ever since!
Maddie - I am a recent graduate from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. I am a lover of fitness, but also a lover of food. In any spare time I have you'll find me in the kitchen cooking. I always was into sports and athletics, playing multiple sports up until the age of 18. While in high school, I had to choose between soccer and swimming and decided swimming was the better choice for me. From there I went on to swim all four years in high school and was recruited to swim for UMass. Postgrad life was scary at first but I knew that I wanted to be involved in fitness somehow. I applied right out of college to Lululemon and fell in love with working there because of the sense of community around the fitness apparel. From that job, I also found F45 and worked there for some time. I worked both of those jobs, juggling an intense but incredible schedule, and was learning more than I ever could have imagined. Being fresh out of school and right into the fitness industry, I realized how important it was to be able to have something for people that wanted to get back into fitness but were not quite sure where to start. Something for those who were striving for STRONGER, not skinnier. This is where BUILT by Biron was born. Carly and I always loved fitness and decided to put our brains together and build this amazing business.
You were both Division 1 college athletes, what was it like?
Carly - Swimming D1 is one of the hardest things I will probably ever experience. It was lots of early mornings and pushing yourself as hard as you possibly can physically and mentally.
Maddie - Being a Division 1 athlete had to have been one of the best experiences I could have asked for in college. Although the schedule was intense and grueling, it taught me so much. It taught me how to have a strong work ethic and good time management but it also taught me about failure and that I could not always focus so much on the outcome but the journey that took me to that moment. Being comfortable with being uncomfortable is the one way to describe being a collegiate swimmer.
If you could tell your freshman self something, what would it be?
Carly- If I could go back and tell my freshman swimmer self something, it would be to completely let my injury heal so that I could actually go back to swimming one day.
Background on Built By Biron
We came up with this idea one day when we were discussing how we have so much experience and knowledge in the fitness industry and we should do something together. The whole goal of it is creating an online program that's accessible to everyone. We want people who don't know what to do at the gym to be able to create a routine and learn what to do there! We want people who are at home to realize that they can 100% still workout from their home and get a good sweat in! Basically, throughout the eight-week program, we are your personal trainers, constantly checking in and seeing how everything is going. The program comes with a shared google doc between Maddie, Carly and the trainee, along with access to an online course explaining every exercise in detail. There are videos about how to do each exercise every day. We check in with each person weekly, to see how we can progress the weights and adjust each person's workout to them.
What inspired/motivated your lifestyle?
We are so motivated by movement and what our bodies are capable of doing, so we just want to be able to share that knowledge and motivate other people to do the same.
What is your biggest tip on starting a healthy lifestyle?
Our biggest tip to beginning a healthy lifestyle would be to create a routine. Once you have that routine going, everything else falls into place.
Where do you see your business going in the next 5-10 years?
Within the next 5 years, we would love to bring Built by Biron offline and into small group and personal training!
Any advice for people looking to start their own small business?
Advice for people starting their own business would be that you can't be scared to invest in it. Really believe in your idea, own it, and invest in it.
You both are fitness instructors, can you explain what you teach?
Carly: I teach R/DE, TRAIN & TRAIN X at B/SPOKE studios. R/DE is a 45-minute spin class, TRAIN is an on the beat HIIT class, and TRAIN X is a HIIT class with on the beat and off the beat movements.
Maddie: The type of training that I coach is strength training, so all functional movement and weighted movements in a HIIT format along with bodyweight cardio with some equipment.
What does a day of being a fitness instructor look like for you?
Carly: Each day as a fitness instructor is different. No two days look alike, which for me is so nice. I love to keep busy and I have a routine in its own special way. I usually teach 2-4 classes a day (about 15-17 a week).
Maddie: The typical day for me is wake up, do my own HIIT workout, eat some breakfast, head over to the facility I am coaching at, then teach my class. Post-class, I like to see my clients and chat with them about the workout and see the areas we can improve on. Then, I head over to Lululemon to work with my fellow lemons! Long days but when you love what you do, it makes it all worth it.
What is your favorite part of being a fitness instructor?
Carly: I absolutely love my job with all my heart. My favorite part of it all is my riders, being able to connect with them and learn about their lives is so nice.
Maddie: I think my favorite part of being a fitness instructor is being able to have a slight impact on someone's life. Whether it be their mood that day, their physical health or mental health, knowing that I had some sort of positive impact on their life makes it all worth it.
What got you started in teaching fitness?
Maddie: After going to college for Kinesiology, I knew that fitness was going to be the spot for me. After swimming and lifting under a Division 1 program at UMass, my passion to continue an intense fitness regimen while working with other people was always there. It inspired me to see my sister succeed post-grad in fitness and I knew that that was where I wanted to be as well.
What is your favorite workout clothing brand?
Carly: My favorite workout clothes are LULULEMON, always and forever baby. Truly the best quality out there.
Maddie: My favorite workout brand by far is Lululemon!!! Best bras, leggings, and tops.
What do you do when you feel stressed or overwhelmed?
Carly: When I find myself getting stressed or overwhelmed, I will go take a class at another studio. This way I can disconnect and just get out of my head and let myself completely go.
Maddie: When I get stressed and overwhelmed, the first thing I do is take a deep breath and take out my planner. Making lists and making sure to reserve time for my own self-care is always a top priority for me. Being able to make sure that there are small periods of time where I can stop and breathe, watch some Netflix, and read a book helps remind me that it will all be okay.
All-time favorite quote?
Carly: My all-time favorite quote is "Work hard in silence, let your success be the noise".
Maddie: My favorite quote is: "It's what you do in the dark, that puts you in the light".
