Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I was born and raised on Cape with a family lineage dating back to the 1800s on Cape. My 92-year-old grandmother was born at Cape Cod Hospital so my family is made up of true “Cape Codders”! I only left the Cape to go to college at URI where I was looking to become a real estate attorney. After graduating college, a woman who was taking one of my spin classes told me I would be a great realtor and got me a paid internship at Robert Paul Properties where I worked in the marketing department. I quietly got my real estate license and jumped into it at only 20 years old. I now celebrate 10 years in real estate. Initially, I just staged homes for local realtors and my own listings, which quickly transformed into an interior design and staging company. I started flipping houses with my partner who was formerly a client of mine. That escalated to new builds where I design the entire home inside and out. When the spray company opportunity was offered to me I couldn’t say no so I added that to the many roles I play! We can’t forget my passion for saving animals. I work closely with a rescue and always have a foster guest in my home... or two!
What is the background on SL Sprays?
SL Sprays started when a friend of mine from LA brought this spray product to the Cape. I was one of her most loyal clients. She taught me to spray and when she moved back to LA I took over the company. I am thankful she brought a healthy alternative to sun tanning to the Cape and I had the opportunity to carry it on.
How are your spray tans different from others?
They are completely safe and organic which many spray solutions are not. I love that my clients leave so happy without having to sacrifice their health in any way.
What is the background of SL Coastal Homes?
SLCH started as just a staging and interior design company. I had a buyer client who flipped houses so I would find the houses for him. My interest grew to do my own projects. He partnered with me and we started flipping houses. After we had a few under our belt, I started to find land and we began building new houses. SLCH now is a business that encompasses all sorts of design angles. We also work with clients who recently bought a house and turn their new home into their dream home.
You are also a real estate agent, tell us about what got you started in real estate.
I was approached by a well-established realtor on Cape. She said I had what it took to be a successful realtor on Cape. I jumped into it at 20 years old and just recently celebrated 10 years in real estate on my 30th birthday which was this past December. It was a grind the first 5 years but I am so thankful I kept pressing. Now I am all referral based and my business is thriving.
What is the background on East Coast Canine Rescue?
ECCR is a Connecticut based rescue. I am so impressed with their dedication to animals. I worked with my attorney to get them Massachusetts state-recognized so now we can carry out adoption events, fostering, adoptions etc. on Cape. They pull dogs on death row from shelters in the south and transport them here. We are foster-based only so the dogs go from shelters to homes where they are loved and cared for until we find appropriate homes for them.
How can someone get involved with East Coast Canine Rescue ?
There is so much you can do to get involved. Visit their website at www.eastcoastcaninerescue.org and you can learn about all the volunteer opportunities. You can foster, help with transporting, run applications, etc. there is something for everyone!
How do you manage your time and productivity while being involved in so much?
I am very regimented with my schedule. I am up early and go to bed early! I have a wonderful assistant who handles a lot for me and a great support system from my family.
Where do you see your businesses in 5-10 years?
I see SLCH growing exponentially. We are getting involved with subdivisions and year after year our team is growing.
What are the biggest lessons you've learned?
I have learned that being a female in a male-dominated industry is not always easy. You are often not taken seriously and always have to be on top of your game.
What are the biggest challenges you faced in the process?
When you trust too much you get walked all over. You have to have a healthy balance of respect and confidence. I am lucky I have such a supportive partner who always backs me.
What career accomplishments makes you the most proud?
Aside from individual accomplishments, I’m mostly proud that everything I have set out to do has grown successfully. I think it’s an accomplishment in itself that I can juggle so many different things successfully.
What is your favorite part of running your own business?
I love being able to provide secure and constant work for my loyal workers. I love that there is no cap as to how big I can grow. The more I grow, the more I can give back.
What do you do when you feel stressed or overwhelmed?
My outlet is fitness. I am a spin fanatic! I go to spin 6 days a week. My other outlet is my family. I spend a lot of time with them as they give me such comfort.
What are your top 3 goals for 2020?
Get on HGTV (I have a contract signed with a productions company trying to get me on a tv show currently)
Get my SLCH showroom building built and open
Grow ECCR on the cape and host at least 2 successful adoption events per year.
Favorite book/podcast/account to follow/music to listen to?
I am always listening to music! You name it I love it. Some days it’s country, some days it’s rap. I run on music!
What is your all-time favorite quote?
“Pretty is as pretty does”
